Roman Emperor Titles

ARM

Armeniacus - conqueror of Armenia.

AVGVSTVS, AVGVSTA, AVG, AVGG, AVGGG

Augustus or Augusta - senior ruler, title bestowed on an emperor or empress. The number of G's indicates the number of Augusti sharing rule of the empire. (Often the last three letters of obverse legends.)

BRIT

Britannicus - conqueror or ruler of Britain.

CAES or CAESAR

Caesar - heir to the throne.

CENS or CENS PER

Censor Perpetuus - chief magistrate who determined the size of the senate, appointed for life.

COS or C

Consul - one of two chief magistrates. (Often followed by Roman numerals indicating the number of terms as Consul.)

DAC

Dacicus - conqueror or Dacia.

DIVI

Divine - acclaimed a deity.

DIVA, DIVO or DIV

God - a posthumous title. (When used, normally the first letters of the obverse legend.)

D N

Dominus Noster - our Lord. (The most common first two obverse legend letters after the death of Constantine I.)

F or FIL

Filius or Filia - son or daughter of the emperor.

GERM

Germanicus - conqueror of Germany.

IMP

Imperator - supreme army commander. The most common first three obverse legend letters before the death of Constantine I.

IMP C

Imperator Caesar. (When used, usually the first four letters of a legend.)

NOB

Nobilissimus or Nobilissima - noble.

NC, NOB C or NOB CAES

Nobilitas Caesar - the royal heir.

OPTIMO or OPTIMO PRINCIPI

The best ruler or highest prince.

PART

Parthicus - conqueror of Parthia.

P F

Pius Felix - dutiful and wise. (PF AVG is often the last five obverse legend letters.)

P M, PON M, PON MAX or PONT MAX

Pontifex Maximus - chief priest. (P M most commonly used and often followed by TR P.)

P P

Pater Patriae - father of the country. (When used, often the last two letters of a legend.)

TR P, TR POT,  TRIB P, TRIB POT, TRIB POTEST or TRIBUN POTEST, etc

Tribunicia Potestate - civil head of state. (TR P is most commonly used and often preceded by P M.)
